Best happy hours on the Goldline, Rose Bowl bound

Take the Metro Goldline to the Rose Bowl and the Rose Parade and hit some of the best happy hours in old town Pasadena.

Metro to the Rose Bowl and some great happy hours

Drinking and driving isn’t cool

Aside from being anti-incumbent, YTsWorld is a huge fan of happy hours, especially ones on the Metro, particularly the Goldline, since YTsWorld is based in NELA. Ultimately, public transportation is good and more politicians should be supportive.

Anyway since the Goldline will probably transport many Rose Parade and Rose Bowl fans over the next few weeks, it’s time to cover some of the best happy hours on the Goldline. (more…)

YT for Congress and Free Beer

Help launch the YT for Congress campaign and get free beer.

Free beer

Come bribe YT

Bribes, kickbacks, pork and insider information for stock trading. Those are the kinds of angles that make people rich. Just look at Congress and all their friends. What a racket!

And that’s why YT is running for Congress, expect on a platform of honesty. Of course, YT will accept bribes and kickbacks. And Pork? Yes, YT ain’t kosher. And for fans, a special insider information newsletter for guaranteed stock market returns — for a monthly cost of course. YT has to get his, man.

Anyway, become part of the YY for Congress campaign. Stop by The York in Highland Park today between 12:15 and 1:15 PM, yell “YT for Congress” and I’m buying your first two drinks ($20 limit per person).

Can’t make it? This is just the first of many campaign stops. So stay tuned for more events.

Bolillo’s: A Super way to enjoy Highland Park on the cheap

The El Super bakery in Highland Park. Get your fresh bolillos.

I can smell the bakery from here.

A taste of French Mex at el Super

So, you’re planning a Highland Park visit because you’ve heard there is an unbelievable soda selection at Gelcos. Or, maybe the french fries at The York are more your calling. Both are worthy HLP visits.

But another great stop is El Super for some fresh made bolillos. (more…)

But, he wasn’t a gangster

Denying gang-affiliation in the midst of violence and deaths does no one any good in Highland Park.

But he wasn't a gangster

Do lies help kids out of violence?

I love the line in a Bronx Tale, “Nothing worse than wasted potential”. I see a lot of wasted potential around me here in Highland Park. Gang violence is common. I’ve even witnessed a gang murder — one of the worst experiences of my life.

Yet, every time a gang kid gets killed, “he wasn’t involved with gangs” is the all-too-common response from friends, family and community.

Oh, yes he was. (more…)

Strangest ride in your neighborhood

The strangest ride in my neighborhood is a hearse.

Why would you want a drive hearse every day?

A death fetish car?

I walk around a lot in my neighborhood — the Highland Park district of Los Angeles. 90042, homie! And, this morning I walked down to Paisano’s for a few potatoes, cilantro, and some peppers. Had fried potatoes on the brain after smelling some on my walk to the Highland Park, Park and Rec center.

Along the way I walked past one of the oddest properties in HLP: the Roundup. And, as usual, the hearse was parked out front. That has to be the oddest ride in my neighborhood.

What you got?

Galcos: A little more love than hate

Galcos is sometimes to hipsterish for me, but you can't deny their selection of beer and soda, and some pretty decent sandwiches.

A Highland Park landmark

Still a great selection of beer, soda and some pretty good sandwiches

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Galcos in Highland Park for years now. I mean, I used to go to Galcos to pick up some extra milk, some bread, etc. Of course, Galcos hasn’t been a grocer for nearly a decade. Maybe more.

But I continue to go, even despite some poor customer service — although that was many years ago. (more…)

Hollywood invades HLP’s Figueroa Boulevard

Figueroa Blvd being invaded by Hollywood for another movie shoot. Does it do the neighborhood any good?

Becoming a little more hip, Figueroa Blvd.

But does it bring anything to the community?

There have been a lot of movies and commercials shot in Highland Park, and they’re back at it again today. Went down to Antigua right off the Metro Goldline for a little dose of joe and saw production trucks and people everywhere.

But, I wonder, what does Highland Park get in return for hosting all these movie scenes? (more…)

KROQ puts a bulls eye on Charlie Sheen’s back

KROQ can't stop talking about Charlie Sheen. Isn't that putting a bulls eye on Charlie's back?

He might be crazy, but is KROQ any better?

You go Chuck

I’ve been listening to KROQ again recently, something I haven’t done in a while and now I’m remembering why. The radio station just can’t get enough of Charlie Sheen’s recent radio interview rant. He’s so crazy, but they on KROQ are not?

Time to turn off the haters? (more…)

And by the hair of a dog, Hyde wins

Stopped by Dan's on York in Highland Park for a little hair of the dog.

Dan's - Great prices, friendly service

I have no will power

Well, my burrito became more like brunch then lunch. Then Hyde started yapping about walking down to Dan’s, and a walk sounded nice since it rained this morning and the air feels and smells fresh and clean.

Sure, I could have just left it at a walk, but I didn’t. (more…)

No liquid lunch today

I have my burrito left over from El Arco Iris last night. An interesting Los Angeles restaurant in Highland Park just a few blocks off the Metro Goldline. Will I eat the burrito instead of resorting to a liquid lunch?

Burrito or walk to Dan's?

Simple goals

Decided to stop by el Arco Iris for dinner last night since I couldn’t drive and didn’t want to go far. Plus, I made it for happy hour – one of my favorite times to go anywhere. Did the Valentine’s thing over the weekend anyway. I can only impress so much!

Of course, I ordered my Jessie’s Extra Special. Didn’t eat much since I was already loaded with carbs, so that’s my lunch today.  A real solid lunch.

Yet, I’m already feeling the effects of yesterday’s carb loading. That’s got me thinking about a walk down to Dan’s and a little hair of the dog.

The only problem is there is never a “little” hair of the dog in my world.

Will I have will power?
